Thats how 16-year-old Lillian Albaugh of Shepherd describes the annual Isabella County event shes been involved with since she was 5. It feels like a home to me, she said. Additionally important to her is 4-H, which the Western Spurs club member has been involved with for the past six years or so. This morning, Albaugh had just wrapped up presenting and interviewing in front of judges for the Achievement Booth competition. Fair Leadership Superintendent Doris McNeill described the Achievement Booth as a presentation of what participants have accomplished and learned from 4-H over the years. She added that while kids do include trophies and ribbons, its not just about winning awards that the judges look at. There is a sit-down interview as well as the presentation itself where judges consider 4-H participation, the actual visual aspects of the booth and leadership projects contestants have been involved with. McNeill said some of the most important things kids can take away from competing are planning, record keeping and organization skills. Even more important are the skills for life they develop, she said. I think the interview is a life skill and I think that whole process will help them further in life, said McNeill. For Albaugh, the interview was definitely one area she wanted to focus on and hoped to learn from.
