GettyImages-543976778.jpg Late last week, the browser Opera confirmed a successful attack on its systems. The hackers were likely able to access personal information, company developer Tarquin Wilton-Jones wrote in a post announcing the breach, including some of our sync users passwords and account information. Opera sync is that browsers version of the feature that helps you coordinate passwords across devices. Save your Facebook password in Chrome or Safari or Opera on your desktop, and itll be there waiting for you on the mobile versions of those devices, as long as youre logged in. While Opera says it encrypts all passwords it stores, it still reset all Opera sync account passwords, and asked people to reset passwords for third-party sites as well, as a precaution. Of Operas 350 million users, only 1.7 million used sync in the last month, meaning the fallout is likely limited. The incident is a reminder, though, that while browser-based password syncing can be a terrific time-saver, its not a replacement for more serious security hygiene. The real concern is that while these browser-based password managers make life more convenient, they may offer a false sense of security. The issue isnt that what happened to Opera will necessarily happen elsewhere; thats a concern, but its not something thats likely to be repeated at companies with more security resources at their disposal, like Google or Apple. The real concern is that while these browser-based password managers make life more convenient, they may offer a false sense of security. In fact, for the most part, its not at all clear how secure any of them really is.

Chris Christie on Tuesday shot down an attempt to raise New Jerseys minimum wage to $10.10 an hour in the next year and to at least $15 over the next five. Christie announced his veto at an event at a market in Pennington, saying it would burden small businesses and describing the proposal as the heavy hand of government. Standing in the organic fruit and vegetable section of the market, Christie said raising wages is the job of business owners. All of this sounds great, raising the minimum wage, when youre spending someone elses money, he said. Democrats, who control the statehouse, and liberal groups have put the legislation at the center of their agenda. The Legislature sent Christie the measure in June. Democratic leaders have said theyll pursue a constitutional amendment to raise the minimum wage without the need for Christies approval. The governors actions have only served to temporarily thwart a unified effort to raise New Jersey families and provide a much needed boost to our economy. said Analilia Mejia, director of the left-leaning group NJ Working Families. Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto said lawmakers will put the issue to voters in a ballot question. Its too late to make this years ballot; the soonest the measure could appear before voters would be 2017. I am confident that New Jersey residents will eventually right this wrong, he said. medical interview prepVoters last approved raising the wage in 2013, from $7.25 to $8.25.
